Book of the Week: Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch

Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch
by Sally Bedell Smith
Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch (2012) by Sally Bedell Smith is hailed for its "great reporting and insightful writing." The book details the life and reign of a monarch who spearheaded a country that's reeling the behind the devastation of World War II and slowly transitioning as one of the key players in global politics. Smith explicates the Queen's role and how she manages to perform it which seemed to defy rational explanation: a hereditary position consecrated by God, embodying a multicultural and multifaith nation far different from the homogeneous land ruled by her predecessors spanning a thousand-year history. Smith yearly set the pieces that date from the reign of Queen Victoria, highlighting on Elizabeth II, a singular and internationally famous figures who is today the Western world's longest-serving leader--seemingly as familiar, predictable and unchanging as she is dutiful.

Throughout her reign, Her Majesty managed to stay above politics and, for the most part, controversy. If not exactly a Hollywood star, she is a major celebrity. She has even been portrayed on The Simpsons by comedian Eddie Izzard.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune praised Smith for offering a "most satisfying and enjoyable read," thanks to her "refreshinngly clear understanding of the role that Elizabeth plays both as sovereign and doyenne of a large, somewhat dysfunctional and often querulous family."

The San Antonio Express-News called Smith's work as "absolutely engaging," given that it was "very well-researched... warm and sympathetic."

The Telegraph lauded the book because it was "fluently written and containing quite a lot of intriguing 'new' information."

Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch (Paperback) is now available in Amazon, $16.31.
