The Earl of Wessex, Trustee, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award International Foundation, and The Countess of Wessex this evening held a Reception for the World Fellowship.

Spain protests Prince Edward’s Gibraltar visit

Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee. 

The Spanish Government through its Foreigh Office has issued a formal protest over the upcoming visit of the Earl and Countess of Wessex to Gibraltar, a British territory that sits on Spain’s southwestern corner.

Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, are scheduled to visit Gibraltar on June 11-13 to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The complaint is not unusual. Last year, the Prince of the Asturias raised the centuries-old dispute in time when the Prince of Wales paid a visit to Madrid. In 2009, similar protest was made when Princess Anne visited the British territory.

Spain ceded Gibraltar to Great Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, although the kingdom has long argued that it should be returned to Spanish sovereignty.

However, a 2002 referendum overwhelmingly rejected a deal of shared sovereignty with much of the population demanding to remain a part of Great Britain.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex arrived at Heathrow Airport, London, from Bahrain.

Present were Brigadier John Smedley and Miss Sarah Sienesi.

The Princess Royal together with Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, attended the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards at MediaCity UK, the Quays, Salford.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex were in two-day trip to Afghanistan to pay a visit to the Bastion Military Base in Hemland Province, Dec. 20, 2011. Here are some photos of the trip, showing the Earl and Countess as they spend some time and talk with the armed forces.

BALMORAL CASTLE: 

Princess Alexandra, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy, represents HM The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at the Service of Thanksgiving in honor of the The Earl of Harewood held in All Saints Church, Harewood, West Yorkshire.  Lord Crathrone represented The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall; Mr. Alastair Watson, the Duke of York; Prince Michael of Kent, The Earl and Countess of Wessex; Hon. Mrs. Louloudis, The Princess Royal was represented; and the Earl of St. Andrews, The Duke and Duchess of Kent. Likewise, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were present in the event.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE: 

The Duke of York today attended engagements in Singapore.

He visited the Nanyang Technological University Main Campus and attended the signing ceremony for the Joint Masters Programme in Project Management between the University of Manchester and Nanyang Technological University.  He received a briefing on the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University and attended a British Chamber of Commerce Luncheon for British entrepreneurs given by the British High Commissioner to the Republic of Singapore at Eden Hall. 

In the afternoon, he met former Singapore President Sellapan Ramanathan at the Four Seasons Hotel. Later, he received received by The President of the Republic of Singapore at the Istana and the Emeritus Senior Minister at the Istana. He also met the Group President of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation at Capital Tower. 

BUCKINGHAM PALACE: 

The Earl and Countess of Wessex, Founders, Wessex Youth Trust, held a Luncheon at Ascot Racecourse, Berkshire.
