Prince Philip turns 92 – a look back at a royal birth

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Image credit: Reuters

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born on June 10, 1921. He was the youngest child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and of Princess Alice of Battenberg Prince Andrew was a son of King George I of Greece, while Princess Alice was a daughter of Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt and Princess Alice, second daughter and third child of Queen Victoria of England.

The life of Prince Philip, who turns 92, was so full of hardships and tragedies. Born to a family, that, by royal standards, was on the brink of poverty, Prince Philip endured a homeless existence until he married Princess Elizabeth, who later on ascended the British throne as Elizabeth II. His life was so full of struggle, of an aimless search for a true home, and the determination to remain steadfast despite the changes of time and his uneasy relationship with the press, who always criticized, it not mocked him, for his straight-forward attitude and acerbic frankness.

One housekeeper once remarked that Prince Philip’s family “were as poor as a church mice.” Agnes Blower, who served the Prince’s family, said this when she first allowed a reporter to inspect her photograph album in 1962.

-->
Preparations for the birth of Prince Philip were modest enough. The local doctor was summoned to attend the delivery. He soon decided that Alice’s bedroom was suitable for the birth, bodily carried her downstairs, and put her on the large diningroom table. Apparently, Alice’s high state of anxiety, doubles intensified by Andrew having recently left on active service, rendered the table more suitable than a bed-though the medical reasons for this decision was not entirely clear.

Assisted by Nurse Roose, and with her two elder daughters, age 16 and 15, available to help, Alice gave birth to a healthy, well-formed boy, with tiny wisps of very fair hair. This successful delivery was certainly the first, and the very probably last, time that a future consort to the British monarch has been born on a diningroom table. At the very least, it offers us an interesting contrast with the more luxurious circumstances of the births of Philip’s own children.

The birth of the boy brought joy to Prince Andrew and as something of a relief to the Greek royal family in which female progeny had recently heavily outnumbered male offspring. Not only did Andrew now have a son and an heir, but Philip immediately became sixth in line of succession to the Greek throne.

Since the Julian calendar was still in force in Greece, the actual date of Prince Philip’s birth, as stated, was May 28, 1921. Only when Greece adopted the Gregorian calendar two years later was the date amended –put forward 13 days—to June 10, which has ever since been Prince Philip’s official birthday.

June 6, London – Prince Philip has been rushed to the hospital last night to undergo an operation due to recurring bouts with abdominal pain.  The duke, who will celebrate his 92nd birthday this month, has undergone a series of tests last week, which prompted him to undergo exploratory surgery under general anaesthetic, reports Mail Online.

But ever the steadfast soldier, the frail royal consort even managed to appear on seven high profile public engagements this week, including a visit at a naval station, two dinners and the church service commemorating Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th coronation anniversary. He was even seen rubbing elbows and throwing jokes with some 8,000 guests at yesterday’s Buckingham Palace garden party. But by 5:30, quietly disappeared from the crowd and proceeded to the London Clinic, a private hospital on Harley Street. He is scheduled to have the surgery today and will most likely recuperate at the hospital for two weeks.

Given the frail condition of his health, Prince Philip cancelled two engagements last week, including a lecture at Windsor Castle and a reception at Buckingham Palace, although Palace staff pointed out it wasn’t due to abdominal pain.

Royal can reveal that the Duke has “been feeling under the weather” for a few days prior to his hospitalization, not because of abdominal pain, “but that is because he had lost his voice. The two are quite unconnected.”

Palace insider noted that he left the Buckingham Palace garden party “quite calmly.” He was at his best and nobody else at the party suspected that something was wrong with him.

The duke’s hospitalization spree since last year prompts further questions about the Duke of Edinburgh’s workload and that of the Queen, who herself has been hospitalized a few weeks ago. In fact, the Queen had to skip the Commonwealth meeting this year. Furthermore, the some most active members of the British Royal Family are way beyond retirement years and have recently endured the frailty of old health. The Queen’s cousin, the Duke of Kent, suffered a stroke and his sister Princess Alexandra was also diagnosed with a serious condition. Both had to scale down their public duties.

Buckingham Palace had announced earlier that the royal couple “would be scaling back on their long-haul foreign travel,” giving the younger royals the burden of carrying out official duties. Buckingham Palace Clarence House and Downing Street have been talking about Prince Charles’ taking an even more prominent role in day to day affairs. Meanwhile, heavy pressure is also laid on Prince William and the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge as it seems that the call for them to become full-time working royals will turn louder and louder in the succeeding months. After all, they’re the closest couple in line to the throne, next to Prince Charles, so there’s no reason why they should keep on talking about living low-profile royal existence. They owe the privileges that they enjoy from the very position that they’re in right now, so, they should really feel it’s their obligation to serve country first before thinking of themselves.

Queen and Prince Philip to skip odd engagements

Peter Phillips talks about grandparents. Image credit: Zimbio
June 5 - Old age is already taking its toll on the health of the once-robust Queen and her once-gamely consort, Prince Philip. Queen Elizabeth II’s oldest grandchild, Peter Phillips revealed that the royal couple might decide to skip any “odd engagement” due to their advancing age. In an interview with ITVs Daybreak, 36-year-old Phillip revealed that Prince Philip is feeling “under the weather,” following the long list of engagements recently.

Phillips also said: “Yes, but you also have got to remember his age, both of their ages, you know... what they do at their age - they do a lot more than most other pensioners of their equivalent age so... if occasionally there is the odd engagement cancelled, it shouldn't come as such a surprise, given the workload that they do have.”

Phillips said that he is 'hugely proud' of the Queen, citing her as a “great inspiration” to the country, “a great role model” and “an inspiration to all of us.” He also noted that the Abbey commemorating the 60thanniversary of her grandmother’s coronation was a “fantastic” feat, imbued with a 'real sense of history.”

Prince Philip discharged from hospital

Prince Philip smiles while leaving the hospital

Prince Philip, who celebrates his 91st birthday June 10, was finally discharged from hospital after being hospitalized with bladder infection at the height of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The Prince was rushed to King Edward VII Hospital in London last Sunday after complaining of abdominal pains. Together with the Queen, he was left standing and exposed to drizzle for four hours during the Thames River parade.

When asked if he was feeling better while leaving the hospital, the Prince replied with the hint of a smile: “Well I wouldn't be coming out if I wasn't!”

“Together, they are invincible. They are the most incredibly supportive couple to each other,” says Princess Eugenie, who said that the Queen greatly felt the Prince’s absence at the height of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

“For Granny to come and do that alone was probably quite testing and I think he is her rock, really, and she is his,”

The Prince's birthday will be celebrated by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery when it fires a 41-gun salute in his honor in Hyde Park, London, but the Prince will not attend the event. Instead, he will spend the day at Windsor with his family.

Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “He's out of hospital, his condition is improving and he will continue his convalescence at home.”

The prince was immediately rushed to the King Edward VII Hospital due bladder infection. He will be confined “for a few days,” and was said to very disappointed because was not able to join the Diamond Jubilee concert, as well as today’s engagements.

Prince Philip and Prince Charles are up against the proposed wind farm to be built on Crown land

Despite the million-dollar pound subsidy that the Crown Estates is expected to earn from the upcoming wind turbines that will soon dot the Crown land, Prince Philip and Prince Charles have staunchly opposed the notion, reports the Daily Mail.

Late last year, the duke of Edinburgh called these wind turbine ‘absolutely useless, completely reliant on subsidies and  an absolute disgrace’, claiming they would never work and would need back-up capacity. Meanwhile, the prince of Wales called these “a horrendous blot on the landscape.”

Campaign groups have already emerged to oppose the project.
